Truth Matters!
“Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” John 18:38
We live in a time when many people do not believe in absolute truth, and others are afraid to speak out against these views. You would think that all of these people could not be professing Christians.
However, the American Worldview Inventory 2020 concluded that “belief in absolute moral truth rooted in God’s word is rapidly eroding among all American adults, whether churched or unchurched, within every political segment, and within every age group.” The study found that evangelicals, defined as those believing the Bible to be God’s true, reliable word, are almost as likely to reject absolute moral truth (46%) as to accept it (48%). Only 43% of those surveyed who identify as born-again Christians still embrace absolute truth. Why does truth matter? Without it, there is no way to be made right with God.
Jesus was standing before Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Judea. The Jewish religious leaders brought Jesus to Him to be condemned for treason and be put to death. He was charged with inciting people to riot, forbidding the people to pay their taxes, and claiming to be King. Scripture tells us that Pilate could find no fault in Jesus. In other words, He was innocent of the trumped-up charges.
Before Pilate asked his infamous statement, Jesus said, “For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” What is the truth that He proclaimed? John Macarthur writes:
Christ proclaimed the truth about God, men, sin, judgment, holiness, love, eternal life, in short, “everything pertaining to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). What people do with the message of truth Jesus proclaimed determines their eternal destiny; as He went on to declare, “Everyone who is of the truth hears (the Greek word includes the concept of obedience; cf. Luke 9:35) My voice.” Jesus is “the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through [Him]” (14:6). In 10:27 He added, “My sheep hear My voice and I know them, and they follow Me.” Only those who continue in His Word are truly His disciples; only those who are truly His disciples will know and be set free by the truth (8:31–32).
If there is no absolute truth, then there is no need for a Savior. But, there will be many on the day of judgment that will realize that there is absoluter truth and that Jesus is the author of truth.
