Praying For The Dead?

And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,

Hebrews 9:27

Is it biblical to pray for the dead? The short answer is no. As the writer of Hebrews points out, when we die, there are no more second chances. If you die in your sins, you don’t get a second chance to become a follower of Christ. There are no do-overs or mulligans.

Despite the clear biblical evidence that praying for the dead serves no purpose, some promote this false teaching. All of the Orthodox churches, as well as the Roman Catholic Church, teach that it is biblical to pray for the dead. The following is from a Roman Catholic source on praying for the dead:

“As the Bible and Catholic tradition point out, our prayers can help the heaven-bound souls in purgatory. Countless saints and mystics have defended these claims. Once in heaven, these purified souls, or saints, can intercede for others before the throne of God—making our prayers for the souls in purgatory even more meaningful in the long term. St. Pope John Paul II said that “praying for the souls in purgatory is the highest act of supernatural charity.” 

This false teaching leads people to a false sense of security, believing that it is not necessary to be a follower of Christ in this life. Purgatory (a made-up place where people go to pay for their sins so they can get to heaven) and praying for the dead are two lies straight out of the pit of Hell.

The truth is that once you die, you face your eternal consequences. For those who have made Jesus Lord and Savior, you are in the presence of the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). For those who have rejected Christ, waiting for the final judgment that will cast them into the Lake of Fire forever (Revelation 20:14-15).

Today is the day of your salvation. We don’t get second chances once we die.
